Through a richly layered and nonlinear narrative, the artists manifest a fleeting world of our own–an ephemeral sanctuary that embraces all who step within it.Showcasing the work of Ali Arévalo, Sangre de María, Max Frances, Annika Sunne, Lisa Vander Plaetse, and Julia Cella&nbsp; The works carry an undercurrent of the past—of wounds and wisdom—revealing how harnessed histories fuel radical imagination. The expansive paintings are a vessel for enquiry – Max’s works depict the dialogue between their internal and external worlds. They look at the interplay between the familiarity and the unfamiliar, in a visual language that is at once gentle and vulnerable. Max approaches this through varied mediums. Oil pastels add depth and texture, which enables the works to query the felt and unexpected elements of memory, doubt, and relational experience. Additionally, the works are accompanied by Max’s written thoughts. The two mediums are in conversation - Frances’ writing influences the distorted marks, movements, and colours in their paintings. Similarly, the paintings influence their word choice and imagery. The dance between mediums embodies Maxs’ playful self-exploration, personifying how the self is in dialogue with the world around it. The exhibition transcends location, comprising works produced in Melbourne, London, and Barcelona. Max and Em examine how queer and diasporic people build home within the body, to ask if the ‘home’ is a portable concept. Maxs’ anthropomorphic paintings and sculptures explore how their body transforms in unfamiliar spaces. Their work dissects the relation between space and body to consider how painting and sculpture can clarify the precarity of bodies in modern society. Max’s process is intuitive and emergent, evolving between their home, Melbourne, and their residency at La Place Artspace, Barcelona. Em illustrations pairs with a practice of casting and distorting found textures. They use latex as a conduit for something distorted, something fleshy, something familiar yet uncanny. In congruence with Lotte’s articulation of the body-in-space, Em interrogates how the external world imprints on the internal self. Growing Pains is a dialogue between the artists, which invites the viewer to confront the complexities of identity in transnational contexts. These artists from within and outside the ACT intentionally destabilise the traditional codes of abstract painting and sculpture to create works of art that question binary notions of gender, identity and the body. The exhibition and program of events examine, reveal and create space to share queer stories through works of art.
